Give Flooring Sales a Good Foundation

Offer a wide choice of products to encourage sales

With high living costs and subdued consumer confidence continuing, homeowners are approaching renovation projects more cautiously, focusing on upgrades that deliver real value. Timber flooring is one such investment – enhancing a property’s aesthetic appeal and long-term value. For builders’ merchants, this offers a strong opportunity to boost sales by stocking a sought-after product that combines practicality and lasting style.

Wood flooring is not only attractive, but also a hygienic and low-maintenance option, making it particularly suitable for allergy sufferers. Its wide range of species, tones and styles – from cost-effective Pine and Spruce to classic Oak and other premium hardwoods – makes it easy to match any customer’s budget and design preference.

The key to a successful sale is in understanding your customer’s specific needs: where the floor will be laid, the expected level of foot traffic, and the humidity of the space, all of which will help inform the correct choice between solid or engineered hardwoods, or versatile softwoods.

Hardwood flooring offers exceptional durability and resistance to damage, while softwood options provide a more affordable alternative that still delivers style and flexibility. Though more prone to marks, softwoods are often easier to repair and refinish.

Moisture content is another critical factor – timber must be given time to acclimatise to its environment prior to installation to prevent any warping or movement issues. Make sure to remind customers that they need to allow at least 24 hours (48 hours for hardwoods) for the wood to stabilise to the room conditions before fitting it in any project.

Effective merchandising plays a pivotal role in driving sales. Well-presented displays and sample boards can help customers visualise options more clearly. Take advantage of supplier support, such as display units and marketing materials, to showcase your timber flooring range and maximise return from every customer interaction.
