Timber mouldings are a simple way to boost RMI sales

The finishing touch to any room

Timber mouldings are the finishing touches used to mask the transitions between interior surfaces in a room, whether those surfaces are the edges of walls, floors, doors, or windows.

Mouldings come in many forms, such as picture rails, architraves, skirting boards and windowboards, and are widely available in a choice of styles and timbers such as pine, redwood, oak and light hardwoods. Many are also now available made from primed or veneered MDF, a material that is easy to mould into different shapes.

Timber mouldings are already a profitable category for builders’ merchants, popular with tradespeople since they can be fitted quickly and easily on site. Once installed they can be painted, varnished or stained to suit any style.

Moulding products are also now available that do not need to be sanded down or painted once installed, saving tradespeople precious time on site and helping projects get finished on schedule.

Reduce draughts to cut energy bills

While mouldings are primarily used to conceal unsightly gaps between edges of interior surfaces, they can also play a very useful energy saving role in the home. Even small gaps between floors and walls can cause draughts to enter a room and make the occupants feel cold. This can then lead them to increase the temperature of their heating to compensate for the chill.

While consumer confidence has been hit by the recent uncertainty in the economy and rising interest rates, sky high energy costs are causing people to look for simple, cost-effective ways to lower their fuel bills. Reducing draughts throughout the home can go a long way towards saving money over the winter months.

For properties that need a little TLC, especially older ones whose original period features may have been stripped out over the years, introducing new mouldings can prevent such draughts and stop households from feeling the need to raise their heating thermostats to compensate. Profiles are available in a wide range of designs from Victorian, Edwardian and contemporary to suit any room decor.
