IoBM conference inspires merchanting professionals to Thrive

 20 Oct 2026

Conference highlights the importance of professional development, mentoring and investing in the next generation of talent

The Institute of Builders Merchants (IoBM) brought together professionals from across the building materials sector for its 2026 conference, Thrive – How to Advance Your Career in Merchanting, at JCB World Headquarters in Staffordshire on 15 October.

Hosted by BBC presenter Jason Mohammad, the conference explored how individuals can build successful, rewarding and resilient careers in a changing merchanting sector. It encouraged attendees to reflect on their own career journeys, share experiences and identify practical steps to support their future development.

A key message throughout the day was that thriving in any industry takes more than ambition alone. Continuous learning, curiosity, confidence, supportive networks, and a willingness to step outside familiar roles all contribute to career progression.

Discussions also highlighted the value of mentoring within a supportive environment, the importance of employers creating clear development opportunities, and the role of professional bodies in recognising competence and promoting high standards across the industry.

The conference reinforced the complementary roles of the IoBM and the BMF (Builders Merchants Federation): while the BMF provides support to businesses, including training that helps their people build their skills, knowledge and confidence, IoBM membership provides professional recognition and a community through which individuals can continue to develop and demonstrate their expertise.

Turning inspiration into action

Attendees were encouraged to leave with practical commitments to put their learning into effect. These included identifying qualifications and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities, making greater use of IoBM membership benefits, strengthening professional networks and establishing mentoring relationships.

Employers were also encouraged to identify emerging talent within their organisations and invest in their development through the IoBM Talent Development Programme.

Marianna Peet, MIBM, BMF Learning & Development and Apprenticeship Manager said:

“Our Thrive conference was about helping people see what is possible for their careers and giving them the confidence to take the next step. It was encouraging to bring colleagues together to share experiences, learn from one another, and consider how they can keep developing.

“We want people to take more than inspiration away from the conference. Whether that means pursuing a qualification, finding a mentor, making new connections, or exploring the benefits of IoBM membership, everyone can take practical steps. We also want employers to recognise the value of investing in their people and supporting the next generation of merchanting professionals.”

John Newcomb, FIBM, Chairman of the IoBM Management Committee added:

“A thriving building materials sector depends on the skills, professionalism and commitment of its people. The IoBM has an important role to play in recognising that expertise, supporting career development and helping to establish merchanting as a profession with clear opportunities for progression.

“The enthusiasm and engagement at Thrive underline the value of bringing our industry together to share knowledge and experience. I would encourage individuals and employers who want to develop talent, raise professional standards and build stronger careers to find out more about the IoBM and get involved.”

The IoBM offers a range of benefits to support career development, including industry-recognised qualifications, CPD, professional recognition, mentoring, resources and opportunities to connect with fellow professionals.
