Senior Credit Risk Analyst

Document purpose: This role profile sets out the core purpose, responsibilities, performance standards and personal attributes required for the Senior Credit Risk Analyst role in 2026.

Role purpose

The Senior Credit Risk Analyst supports disciplined credit risk management across the NMBS member base, with a particular focus on higher-value credit exposures, financial statement review, credit-limit recommendations and management information. The role provides analytical insight to the Head of Credit and wider Finance team, helping NMBS make informed, timely and commercially balanced credit decisions.

In a challenging trading environment, the role is expected to strengthen NMBS’s credit control capability by enhancing the quality of risk analysis, supporting member engagement, enhancing reporting and helping the Credit Risk team work in a more efficient, consistent and proactive way.

Key responsibilities

Credit risk analysis and credit-limit management

  • Perform detailed credit risk analysis on members to support the credit decision-making process.
  • Review annual financial statements, management accounts and other financial information received from members.
  • Identify financial stress indicators, trading concerns, liquidity pressures and other emerging risk signals.
  • Assess member creditworthiness and provide clear recommendations to the Head of Credit on appropriate credit-limit setting.
  • Take ownership of a defined portfolio of higher-value member credit limits and manage these proactively from a credit risk perspective.
  • Support the Head of Credit with annual member credit reviews and ad hoc risk assessments.
  • Engage with members’ finance and commercial teams where required, to obtain information, understand trading context and support effective credit review.
  • Attend member meetings where appropriate to discuss financial statements, credit position and risk-related matters.

Reporting, management information and insight

  • Produce clear, accurate and timely reports relating to the management of the back-office credit risk process.
  • Prepare a monthly credit risk report for the Head of Credit, highlighting key exposures, movements, risks, actions and recommendations.
  • Track agreed KPIs and provide evidence-based commentary on progress, exceptions and areas requiring attention.
  • Improve the quality and consistency of credit risk reporting so that outputs are useful, actionable and suitable for senior review.
  • Use data and analysis to identify trends, recurring issues and opportunities for process improvement.

Team support and process improvement

  • Support Credit Risk team members by sharing knowledge, best practice and practical guidance.
  • Help develop smarter, more efficient and consistent ways of working within the Credit Risk team.
  • Contribute to process improvement across credit checking, member review, credit-limit monitoring and reporting.
  • Bring forward ideas and initiatives that improve control, accuracy, productivity or member service.
  • Assist in all areas of credit management as required, particularly during periods of increased workload or business pressure.

Member, supplier and internal stakeholder engagement

  • Maintain a professional, customer-focused approach when dealing with members, suppliers and internal stakeholders.
  • Communicate clearly and confidently by telephone, email and in meetings.
  • Build strong working relationships across Finance, Credit Risk and the wider NMBS business.
  • Escalate concerns promptly and constructively, ensuring that risks are visible and understood.
  • Represent the Credit Risk function professionally when engaging with members and external contacts.

General responsibilities

  • Work in line with NMBS policies, procedures and standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality when handling member financial information and commercially sensitive data.
  • Support the wider Finance team and Head of Credit with additional duties that are appropriate to the role and business needs.

  • Strong experience in credit control, credit risk management or a closely related finance discipline.
  • Ability to interpret financial statements, management accounts and supporting financial information.
  • Sound judgement in identifying financial stress signals and assessing the level of risk presented.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise effectively and meet required deadlines.
  • Delivery of agreed objectives and KPIs, both individually and as part of the wider team.
  • High standards of accuracy, attention to detail and consistency in analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of tasks and make well-reasoned recommendations.
  • Professional communication style, including an excellent telephone manner and clear written communication.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK where required for member meetings.
  • Flexibility to support the business outside standard working hours where this is reasonably required.
